With time I’ve stopped fighting against their rambles off the beaten path and now I just expect it. It reminds me of my own childhood in Maryland where I spent most afternoons down at the creek looking for crayfish with my siblings. We would slip along the mossy rocks and make up stories to explain the people who had been there before us and what they must have been doing with the litter they left behind.
Nowdays I can sit at the creek and enjoy a visit with friends as we watch the most beautiful site on earth—children exploring.
We meet ducks, dive for minnows, collect mini clamshells, throw rocks, climb muddy banks, and collect treasures of litter.
Maybe someday I will remember to bring towels and dry clothes for them to change into when the escapade is over. For now, if you happen to drive by a van with muddy handprints on the windows and four shirtless boys giggling in their seats, you will know we just went spent the day at the park.
